my paintings come out of painting. my own connection to painting’s history and a passion on my part to paint. i’m investigating spatial metaphors, technical processes and in-coming information at the same time remaining dedicated to hands-on, first person execution.

i set up limitations within which to improvise. i have a general notion of what the painting will take but i’m pushing or really following the painting along to the point where it animates or takes on a meaning that gives it specificity.

i’m interested in how abstraction can be extended and distended or inflated and oxygenated to address something beyond the rhetoric. my intention is to make something new, to project into a new place. 

i think my paintings are axiomatic. i’m reluctant to reduce the subject to what the source material or references are because that’s something i want to be as wide open as possible. 

i welcome biological, cosmological, archectectual or social readings. i interested in how the paintings open up to those kinds of things. i try to build them to a point where it’s difficult to locate one meaning and they open up to other possibilities.
